Island Tour
This tour offers participants the opportunity to discover some of the most iconic landmarks of São Jorge Island, combining history, culture, and local traditions.
The journey includes a visit to the handicraft facilities of Ribeira do Nabo, where traditional products such as bedspreads, quilts, blankets, tablecloths, and embroidery are handmade using materials like wool, linen, and cotton.
In Urzelina, participants will learn about the volcanic eruption of 1808, one of the most significant events in the island’s history, which devastated much of the town, leaving only the church tower standing. The area is also known for its historical role in orange production and export to the British market.
The tour continues to Manadas, one of the oldest settlements on the island, likely founded before 1559. Here, visitors can admire the Santa Bárbara Church, built in the eighteenth century on the site of an earlier temple. Its rich gilded woodwork and elaborate decoration make it one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture on São Jorge Island and possibly in the Azores. The church is classified as a National Monument.
In Calheta, located on the eastern side of the island, participants will explore one of the regions with the highest number of Fajãs and hiking trails. This area also features a small fishing harbor, campsite, youth hostel, and local facilities. A short stop for lunch will be made here.
Along the trails, participants will encounter breathtaking landscapes, including the iconic Fajãs, waterfalls, and dramatic ocean views. Each experience is designed to immerse visitors in authentic local culture, encouraging interaction with the community through elements such as gastronomy, including coffee, vineyards, and the renowned São Jorge cheese.

If participants wish to visit the interior of the Cheese Factory, there is an additional fee of 1,50€ per person, subject to prior reservation.
